Softball Splits Opening Day of Triangle Classic

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College softball team split in today's opening day of the Triangle Classic. The Roanoke Maroons defeated Meredith 8-5, and the Angels capped off the day with a 6-3 win over St. Andrews University.
After five scoreless frames in game one, the Avenging Angels found themselves down 5-0. The Maroons scored three more in the top of the sixth to extend their lead.
Meredith rookie third baseman Katlyn Johnson homered a ball over the leftfield fence to open the bottom of the inning. Lorri Cole singled and advanced to third on a double down the right field line.
Ashley Green scored Cole on a single, and Whitney Williams drove in both runners to cut Roanoke's lead in half 8-4.
After nearly a two inning break thanks to freshman hurler Taylor Lynn Moore, Beirne returned to the pitcher's circle in the top of the seventh. She struckout Kaci Frick and forced a pair of infield groundouts to shutdown the Roanoke offense.
Meredith scored one more run in the bottom of seven but fell short of the win.
Cole and Green posted two hits apiece, but Roanoke's Emily Lawrence drilled two homeruns on her way to a perfect four-of-four to help secure the win. Maroon Kelly Higbie posted her first win of the season.
Amanda White jumpstarted the final game of the day with a three RBI homerun to take an early lead over the St. Andrews Knights. SAU picked up three runs in four hits in the bottom of the first to tie the game.
Freshman first baseman Macy Allen led off with a single to left in the second inning and centerfielder Courney Saunders drove her home.
Meredith held the Knights in the bottom of the frame, and Green scored White in the top of the third to extend the Avenging Angel lead to two.
Beirne struckout five batters during the next three SAU at-bats to hold the Knights to a 5-3 deficit.
In the top of the sixth, White scored Saunders on a deep sacrifice fly to center field to seal the win.
Saunders and White posted three hits apiece. Both scored twice, and White recorded four RBI to lead the Avenging Angels to a win. Corinne Eosso took her first loss of the season.
Beirne recorded a dozen strikeouts and walked six in 12.1 innings on the day.
